I look around at our society and see that the general consensus is “More is better.” More money, a bigger house, better car, more friends on Facebook, more work, more exercise etc etc. Having competed in athletics at a high level now for fours years and starting to feel fatigued and sore, I have stopped to ponder this assumption that more is better.
This year, 2017, with my athletics training, I have taken a step back and reflected on what I have done so far with regard to training. I can feel that I am physically and mentally tired from four years of sprinting at a high level, which has lead me to reconsider my approach to training.
I have decided to do less training and what I call “purposeful action”, meaning very specific training. The end result has been within a two weeks I ran my second fastest 300m and three weeks later, I ran a personal best in the 300m and broke my own record. Within 6 weeks, I ran a season’s best time in the 400m, which was also my fastest time in the 400m in 11 months and three days later I ran a personal best in the 400m. I have surprised those around me as they have hardly seen me out at training in January and February.
My lessons learnt from this experience are to trust my intuition and inner knowing as to what is right for me, follow my own path with regard to the goals I want to achieve, take purposeful action directly in line with my goals, I can achieve my goals, train hard and rest hard and less is ultimately more.
Flogging myself on the track has resulted in exhaustion and a loss of motivation. By easing back my training and being very specific has resulted in faster times on the track, more free time to do other things and less exhaustion and pain.
The lessons learnt from this experience can be applied to any goal you want to achieve.
